Introducing your tots to technology

Reading this in a public place? Look around you… whether its scrolling through Instagram on mobiles, taking in the latest news on tablets or tapping away on laptops, the majority of people are engaging with technology in some way. We are living in an age where we are constantly faced with different decisions and opinions on how it’s best to bring up our little ones. And there is no doubt that there is plenty to think about when introducing them to technology.

Here at Metanium HQ, we are here to help! It’s important to remember that every child is different, so we’ve compiled a list of pros and cons so that you can make up your own mind on what suits your child(ren) best when it comes to introducing them to technology.

Cons

• Less sociable?

  One common disadvantage that is discussed within the parenting community is the idea that screen time can make our little ones less sociable. We all want our babies to be as happy, healthy and engaged with their surroundings as possible. Some parents have expressed concern that if their baby is focused on a computer, tablet or mobile phone, then they are less likely to interact with the world and people around them. What do you think?

• Affects concentration?

  We all know that our little ones have amazingly active imaginations and some Mums and Dads have expressed concern that introducing children to technology while they are young can interfere with their developmental abilities. Every child is different, so really, it’s down to finding the balance that works for you and your tot.

Pros

• Creative exploration?

  Despite their disadvantages, we know that phones and iPads, have many positives. Most notably the fact that they encourage creativity! Certain apps that allow interaction are so colourful, creative and exciting that they open a new world to your little one.

• Educational?

  With so many new apps and games on offer, why not find an app or educational game for your child to interact with? You could even play alongside them. This means not only will you be able to spend more time together, it will also encourage them to take part more because they want to play with Mummy and Daddy!

  A lot of parents have said educational games can be a great introduction to technology and help to make sure it’s use is beneficial. Some recommend word or counting games such as Teach your Monster to Read: First Steps, Cookie Monster’s Challenge and Elmo Loves 123s Lite. Using apps that teach your toddlers simple things can also be a great step up for when they head to preschool.

Parent knows best!

We completely understand that some parents can feel guilty allowing their little ones to use tablets and mobile phones, believing their children should stick to traditional play and that screen-time should be limited. But introducing gadgets to tots can undeniably have some benefits too and when we use technology so often ourselves, it’s difficult to deny them our favourite accessory.

Now that you’ve had chance to read through some pros and cons, you can make up your own mind! After all, all babies and families are different and when it comes to our little ones, parents know best (although some parents may be slightly more opinionated about the matter!).
